VOiPover3G - Hack Allows iPhone Users to Make VOiP Calls over 3G/EDGE/GPRS - iPhone Hacks

Begränsningen i iPhones kommunikationsmöjligheter tycks ligga i programvaruutvecklingsverktyget iPhone SDK, enligt följande inlägg den 25 januari 2009 på bloggen www.iphonehacks.com.

One of the limitations of VOiP iPhone apps such as Fring and Truphone that are available on the App Store is that you can make VOiP calls only over Wi-Fi and not over the your iPhone's data connection. This is due to limitation of Apple's iPhone SDK which was most likely enforced on Apple by carriers.

Nu har dock "carriern" AT & T klivit av bromsen. Det har dock inte förmått utvecklaren Apple att släppa bromsen ännu, framgår det av följande blogginlägg:

"Apple Still Not Allowing VoIP Calls Over 3G
By Om Malik November 8, 2009

Earlier today in response to my post about Nimbuzz, a good pal emailed to find out why the service didn't work over the iPhone's 3G connection. After all, a few weeks ago AT&T announced support for VoIP over 3G with much fanfare, a move that was widely applauded, including kudos from FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski.

A month has passed since the decision was announced, and there is still no support for VoIP over 3G. "Apple actually did not approve the 3G calling — so they completely broke their promise of allowing VoIP calls on 3G," a Nimbuzz spokesperson said.

Even Skype doesn't work over 3G. Truphone is not working either, much like Fring. I am not sure if these services work over 3G data connections in Europe and other parts of the world, but it looks like Apple is the one putting in the roadblock here."

I can confirm that the latest Nimbuzz, updated from the App Store today, does not allow you to use 3G data connection at all, not even for the limited chat function.
